What Is a Abdominal & Pelvic MRI?

An abdominal and pelvic MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — no radiation — to produce highly detailed cross-sectional images of the organs and soft tissues in the abdomen and pelvis: the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and adrenal glands, and the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus and ovaries, or prostate). It is one of the most powerful tests for characterizing masses and lesions — for example, telling a benign liver cyst from something that needs follow-up — because it shows soft-tissue contrast that CT and ultrasound cannot match, all without radiation. Contrast (a gadolinium-based dye) is often used to better evaluate blood flow to a mass, the bile ducts (MRCP), or the pelvic organs; your physician and our radiologist decide when it is needed.

What Can Abdominal & Pelvic MRI Diagnose?

  • Liver lesions, cysts, hemangiomas, and fatty liver
  • Kidney and adrenal masses
  • Pancreatic and biliary problems (with MRCP)
  • Uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis
  • Prostate abnormalities (dedicated prostate MRI available)
  • Bladder and pelvic floor abnormalities
  • Unexplained abdominal or pelvic pain and masses
  • Staging and follow-up of known abdominal/pelvic findings

Abdominal/Pelvic MRI vs. CT vs. Ultrasound

For characterizing organ masses without radiation, MRI offers the best soft-tissue contrast of the three.

What to Expect During Your Abdominal & Pelvic MRI

1

Check-In & Safety Screening

You'll complete a safety questionnaire about any metal or implants in your body. Our technologist reviews your history and confirms whether contrast is being used and which region is being imaged.

2

Positioning

You'll lie on your back on a padded table that slides into the MRI, with a coil placed over your abdomen or pelvis. If contrast is needed, a small IV is placed. We'll give you earplugs or headphones with music.

3

The Scan

You'll hear rhythmic tapping and humming — completely normal. For abdominal imaging you may be asked to hold your breath for short periods so the organs are sharp. A typical abdominal/pelvic MRI takes 45–60 minutes.

4

After Your Scan

You can drive, return to work, and resume all normal activities immediately. A board-certified radiologist reads your images and delivers results to your physician within 48 hours; stat reads are available for urgent cases.
