Abdominal & Pelvic MRI in Seminole, FL
An abdominal and pelvic MRI is the most detailed scan for the liver, kidneys, pancreas, adrenal glands, and pelvic organs — with no radiation. No referral needed for self-pay, and same-week scheduling at our Seminole, FL imaging center.
What Is a Abdominal & Pelvic MRI?
An abdominal and pelvic MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — no radiation — to produce highly detailed cross-sectional images of the organs and soft tissues in the abdomen and pelvis: the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and adrenal glands, and the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus and ovaries, or prostate). It is one of the most powerful tests for characterizing masses and lesions — for example, telling a benign liver cyst from something that needs follow-up — because it shows soft-tissue contrast that CT and ultrasound cannot match, all without radiation. Contrast (a gadolinium-based dye) is often used to better evaluate blood flow to a mass, the bile ducts (MRCP), or the pelvic organs; your physician and our radiologist decide when it is needed.
What Can Abdominal & Pelvic MRI Diagnose?
- Liver lesions, cysts, hemangiomas, and fatty liver
- Kidney and adrenal masses
- Pancreatic and biliary problems (with MRCP)
- Uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis
- Prostate abnormalities (dedicated prostate MRI available)
- Bladder and pelvic floor abnormalities
- Unexplained abdominal or pelvic pain and masses
- Staging and follow-up of known abdominal/pelvic findings
Abdominal/Pelvic MRI vs. CT vs. Ultrasound
For characterizing organ masses without radiation, MRI offers the best soft-tissue contrast of the three.
| Feature | AMI ✓ | CT | Ultrasound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft-tissue contrast | Excellent — best for organ masses | Good | Limited, operator-dependent |
| Radiation | None | Moderate dose | None |
| Bile ducts (MRCP) | Yes — detailed, non-invasive | Limited | Limited |
| Best for | Liver/kidney/pelvic masses, MRCP, fibroids | Acute abdomen, bowel, bones | First-line screening, cysts |
| Self-pay from | $295 ($395 with contrast) | From $295 | From $195 |
How to Prepare for Your Abdominal & Pelvic MRI
- 1You may be asked not to eat for 4–6 hours before the scan — we'll confirm when you book
- 2Remove all metal jewelry, piercings, watches, and belts
- 3Tell our technologist about any implants, pacemakers, or surgical clips
- 4Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or underwire
- 5Arrive 15 minutes early to complete intake and safety screening
- 6If using insurance, bring your insurance card and physician's order
What to Expect During Your Abdominal & Pelvic MRI
Check-In & Safety Screening
You'll complete a safety questionnaire about any metal or implants in your body. Our technologist reviews your history and confirms whether contrast is being used and which region is being imaged.
Positioning
You'll lie on your back on a padded table that slides into the MRI, with a coil placed over your abdomen or pelvis. If contrast is needed, a small IV is placed. We'll give you earplugs or headphones with music.
The Scan
You'll hear rhythmic tapping and humming — completely normal. For abdominal imaging you may be asked to hold your breath for short periods so the organs are sharp. A typical abdominal/pelvic MRI takes 45–60 minutes.
After Your Scan
You can drive, return to work, and resume all normal activities immediately. A board-certified radiologist reads your images and delivers results to your physician within 48 hours; stat reads are available for urgent cases.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our self-pay MRI starts at $295 without contrast and $395 with and without contrast — up to 75% less than typical hospital pricing. Abdominal and pelvic MRIs often use contrast. Call (727) 398-5999 for an exact quote, or see our transparent self-pay pricing page.
Self-pay patients do not need a referral. Our physician reviews your request the same day — most self-pay patients are seen same day or added as a walk-in. If you plan to use insurance, a physician's order is still required, and we will verify your benefits before your appointment. Call (727) 398-5999 and we'll get you scheduled.
Most abdominal and pelvic MRI exams take 45–60 minutes — a bit longer than a joint or brain MRI because multiple organs are imaged and contrast sequences are often included. We'll give you a time estimate when you schedule.
For many abdominal MRIs — especially of the liver, pancreas, or bile ducts (MRCP) — you'll be asked not to eat for about 4–6 hours beforehand so the images are clearer. Pelvic MRIs may have different prep. We'll give you exact instructions when you schedule your appointment.
It depends on the question. MRI gives superior soft-tissue contrast and uses no radiation, making it excellent for characterizing liver, kidney, adrenal, and pelvic masses, and for the bile ducts (MRCP). CT is faster and better for acute problems, bowel, and bones. Your physician chooses based on your symptoms; for characterizing a known mass or for radiation-free follow-up, abdominal MRI is often preferred.
Contrast (a gadolinium-based dye given through an IV) is often used for abdominal and pelvic MRI to evaluate blood flow to a mass, the bile ducts, or the pelvic organs. Some exams are done without it. If you have significant kidney disease or a prior reaction, tell us — your physician and our radiologist decide whether contrast is needed and safe.
Yes. Pelvic MRI is excellent for uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis, and for evaluating the bladder and pelvic floor. For the prostate specifically, we offer a dedicated prostate MRI with AI-assisted OnQ PI-RADS reporting. Let us know your symptoms when you call and we'll make sure the right protocol is ordered.
