3 Tesla MRI — Our Most Powerful Imaging, Including fMRI
Our 3 Tesla MRI delivers twice the magnetic field strength of standard 1.5T systems — producing the sharpest images available for neurological, musculoskeletal, and prostate imaging. Includes fMRI, NeuroQuant, and OnQ Prostate AI.
What Is a 3 Tesla MRI?
A 3 Tesla (3T) MRI operates at twice the magnetic field strength of a standard 1.5T system, delivering significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio, finer anatomical detail, and faster scan times. This makes it the preferred choice for neurological studies, high-resolution brain imaging, pre-surgical planning, and prostate cancer evaluation. Our 3T MRI is enhanced with Cortechs.ai AI software for NeuroQuant automated brain volumetrics and OnQ Prostate AI-assisted reporting. It also supports functional MRI (fMRI), which maps brain activity in real time — a critical tool for neurosurgical planning and research.
What Can 3 Tesla MRI Diagnose?
- Brain tumors, stroke, and vascular malformations
- Neurodegeneration (Alzheimer's, dementia) — via NeuroQuant AI volumetrics
- Functional brain mapping (fMRI) for surgical planning
- Multiple sclerosis and white matter disease
- Prostate cancer detection and staging — via OnQ Prostate AI
- Spine disorders with ultra-high resolution (herniated discs, stenosis)
- Small joint injuries (wrist, hand, foot) — fine detail imaging
- Musculoskeletal pathology (cartilage, ligaments, tendons)
- Vascular imaging (MRA, intracranial aneurysms)
- Pituitary and orbital imaging
How to Prepare for Your 3 Tesla MRI
- 1Remove all metal jewelry, piercings, watches, hair clips, and body piercings
- 2Tell our technologist about any implants, pacemakers, or surgical hardware — 3T has a stronger magnetic field
- 3Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers, buttons, or underwire
- 4Arrive 15 minutes early to complete intake forms and safety screening
- 5Bring your insurance card and physician's referral order
- 6If you are claustrophobic, speak with your doctor — a mild sedative may be prescribed
What to Expect During Your 3 Tesla MRI
Check-In & Safety Screening
Safety screening for 3T MRI is thorough — the stronger magnetic field requires careful review of any implants or metal in your body. Our technologist will walk you through the questionnaire.
Positioning
You'll lie on a padded table that slides into the 3T MRI bore. The bore is slightly narrower than some lower-field systems, but most patients tolerate it well. Earplugs or headphones with music are provided — 3T scanners are louder than 1.5T.
The Scan
Expect rhythmic tapping and louder acoustic noise than a standard MRI — completely normal. Stay as still as possible. Scan times range from 30–75 minutes depending on the area imaged and whether fMRI is included.
fMRI (if ordered)
For functional MRI studies, you'll be asked to perform simple tasks (finger tapping, looking at images, reading words) while the scanner maps which areas of your brain activate. This is painless and is commonly used for pre-surgical brain mapping.
AI-Enhanced Analysis
NeuroQuant and OnQ Prostate run automatically on qualifying studies, generating quantitative reports alongside the radiologist's interpretation — giving your referring physician richer, more actionable data.
After Your Scan
Resume all normal activities immediately. If IV contrast was used, drink extra water. Results are delivered to your doctor within 48 hours; stat reads are available for urgent cases.
Frequently Asked Questions
3T MRI has twice the magnetic field strength of 1.5T, producing images with significantly higher resolution and signal. This matters most for small structures — the brain, pituitary, prostate, small joints, and spinal cord. For many routine studies (abdomen, pelvis, large joints), 1.5T is excellent. Your physician will order the appropriate field strength for your specific exam.
Yes — 3T MRI uses magnets and radio waves, not radiation. However, the stronger magnetic field means the pre-scan metal screening is especially important. Certain implants safe at 1.5T may not be cleared for 3T. Our team will screen you carefully. The FDA has approved 3T MRI scanners for clinical use.
Functional MRI (fMRI) measures brain activity by detecting changes in blood flow. When a brain region is active, blood flow increases there — fMRI captures this signal in real time. It's used primarily for pre-surgical planning (mapping eloquent cortex — speech, motor, memory areas) and in neurological research.
NeuroQuant is FDA-cleared AI software by Cortechs.ai that automatically measures brain structure volumes (hippocampus, cortex, ventricles, and more) and compares them to age-matched reference norms. The 3T MRI's higher resolution produces especially precise volumetric data, making it ideal for early detection of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions.
OnQ Prostate by Cortechs.ai is AI software that assists our radiologists in reading prostate MRI studies. It highlights suspicious lesions, generates structured PI-RADS-style reports, and improves consistency in prostate cancer detection — reducing missed findings and false positives.
Yes — 3T MRI systems produce more acoustic noise (loud tapping and knocking sounds) than 1.5T scanners. We provide high-quality earplugs and headphones. The noise is harmless; many patients still find the exam manageable, especially with music.
Most insurance plans cover medically necessary MRI regardless of field strength. Coverage depends on the indication and your plan. We'll verify your benefits before your appointment. Call (727) 398-5999 for self-pay pricing.
Yes — a physician's order is required. Your doctor will specify the body area and whether 3T is indicated. Call us at (727) 398-5999 and we'll help coordinate.
