What an echocardiogram shows

A complete transthoracic echo with color Doppler, read by a board-certified cardiologist.

Pumping strength

Your ejection fraction, the share of blood the heart pushes out with each beat, and how each wall of the heart moves.

Valves

Whether any of the four valves leak or are narrowed, and how severe it is. The most common reason doctors order an echo.

Chambers and pressures

Chamber sizes, wall thickness, fluid around the heart, and an estimate of the pressure in the lungs.

Common reasons to have one

  • ✓Shortness of breath, chest discomfort or palpitations
  • ✓A heart murmur heard at a check-up
  • ✓High blood pressure, to check for heart thickening
  • ✓Follow-up of a known valve problem or heart failure
  • ✓Before or during cancer treatments that can affect the heart
  • ✓Family history of cardiomyopathy

If you have chest pain right now, call 911. An echo is a scheduled test, not an emergency test.

Looking at the arteries instead?

Calcium score $99 · Coronary CT angiography $395

An echo looks at the heart muscle and valves. To check the arteries for plaque and blockages, a calcium score or coronary CT angiogram is the right test; we offer both.

Questions patients ask

Do I need a referral?▾

No. Self-pay patients do not need a referral for an echocardiogram. If you plan to use insurance, a physician order is required.

How do I prepare?▾

No preparation. Eat, drink and take your medications as usual. You will change into a gown from the waist up, and small electrode stickers go on your chest.

How long does it take?▾

About 45 minutes. You lie on your left side while the sonographer moves the probe over your chest; you may hear a whooshing sound, which is your blood flow being measured.

Who reads it and how fast?▾

A board-certified cardiologist reads every echocardiogram. The report goes to you and your doctor in 48–72 hours.

Is it the same as a stress test?▾

No. A resting echo is done lying down. A stress echo is done before and after exercise and is ordered for different questions; ask us if your doctor requested one.
